I Drink Dolcetto Now
Try this.
I love it when a bartender puts a wine in front of me— without knowing that I’m a sommelier or what I like to drink— and tells me to try it.
I love it even more when they line up every wine by the glass on the menu for me to try, and I pick something I’d probably never choose on my own…like the Dolcetto that Eddie poured for me at Meeting House in Amagansett last week.
Dolcetto is a dark grape from Piedmont in northwest Italy. It’s low in acid, high in tannins, and ripens early. Dolcetto wine looks deep and dark; smells like violets and licorice; tastes like dark fruits and almonds; and feels smooth and round in your mouth, especially when it’s swirling around some spaghetti bolognese.
I rarely choose an Italian wine over a French one, and that night I took the Italian over both French options. The Dolcetto was that delicious.
Look at me. I drink Dolcetto now. Do you?
Chin!
(Or should I say Salute?!)
